How to add New Zealand rural delivery shipping rates in Shopify

Updated · SMART Shipping Rates (E-TRADE PARTNER)

New Zealand rural delivery is an address fact (RD numbers, rural flags), not a clean postcode-only split. SMART Shipping Rates & Rules can do both: hide or surcharge when Shipping address line 1 contains `RD` or `Rural Delivery`, and price a calculated rate for a rural postcode list. Calculated rates need Carrier Service. Address-line hide rules do not. Postcode lists miss some rural streets and can include mixed urban/rural codes, so verify against NZ Post or your courier.

4.9 · SMART Shipping Rates does this with zones, calculated rates, and delivery customizations.

NZ couriers add a rural ticket on many tracked parcels. A $7 Auckland rate that also applies to an RD address in Northland is how stores lose the surcharge they already pay. Shopify native zones can target New Zealand as a country. They cannot see RD on the street line, and they do not ship with a built-in rural postcode pack.

The reliable checkout control is address-line matching for `RD` and `Rural Delivery`. A postcode list is a useful second layer for codes that are mostly rural, and for customers who omit RD from the street. Use both if rural cost matters.

Why NZ rural needs two layers

  • NZ Post treats rural as a property of the address (often an RD number), not as a postcode by itself.
  • Some postcodes contain both a town and surrounding RD addresses.
  • Customers sometimes type a rural street without RD, so a postcode list still helps.
  • Couriers differ. A code that is rural for one network may be urban for another.

What Shopify can and cannot do natively

Native Shopify can have a New Zealand zone. It cannot hide Standard when address line 1 contains RD 2, and it cannot attach a surcharge to a long rural postcode list without an app. SMART splits the job: Delivery customizations for street text, Shipping rates for postal lists.

Layer 1: match RD on the address

This is the same mechanism as PO Box restrictions. Open Delivery customizations, choose the Address & Contact Details condition set, and use Shipping address line 1 or line 2.

  1. Create a hide or rename rule if you only need to swap method names (for example rename Standard to Standard + rural).
  2. Or create a calculated rural rate in Shipping rates for all NZ, then hide the cheap method when the address contains RD.
  3. Add condition groups (OR) for contains `RD`, contains `R.D.`, contains `Rural Delivery`, and contains `Rural Del`. Matching is case-insensitive.
  4. Do not use a lone contains `RD` if you also sell to streets like Harding Street without a space pattern you have tested. Prefer ` RD` (space before RD) or `RD ` (space after) if a short `RD` creates false matches. Test real rural and urban addresses.
  5. Confirm in real checkout. Checkout simulator does not apply delivery customizations.

Common mistake: postcodes only

A rural postcode list will miss an RD address inside a mixed urban code, and it can surcharge a town centre that shares a rural-looking code. Start with address-line RD matching, then add the postcode list as a net for carts that omit RD.

Layer 2: rural postcode list

In Shipping rates, create a zone named NZ Rural. Country New Zealand. Enable Target by address, Postal code, matches any, and paste the lists below. Use `*` or `...` if you later group codes (for example `3171...3180`). The lists are individual codes because rural NZ codes are not one continuous range.

These codes are a widely circulated merchant pack drawn from the NZ Post Rural Delivery Directory as republished for shipping rules (commonly dated January 2022). They are not a live NZ Post feed. Re-check against NZ Post Address Services or your courier rural checker before you rely on them for every order.

You can paste North and South Island into one zone, separated by a comma. Leading zeros matter in the list (`0171`, not `171`) so they match checkout postcodes that include the zero.

Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules

  1. Decide the rural extra (for example +$6.00) from your courier rural ticket, not from a guess.
  2. Open Shipping rates and create NZ Urban (country New Zealand, no rural postal list) with the standard rate.
  3. Create NZ Rural with the postcode paste list and the higher rate. Check Carrier Service if zone creation is disabled.
  4. Open Delivery customizations and hide the urban method when address line 1 or 2 contains RD or Rural Delivery, so an RD address in a mixed postcode does not keep the cheap rate.
  5. Optional: rename the remaining method to Courier + rural so the surcharge is obvious.
  6. Test 1010 Auckland urban, an RD address in 0172, and a listed rural postcode without RD in the street.

Worked example: $7 urban, $13 rural

A Wellington store pays about $6 extra for rural tracked parcels. Checkout should show Courier $7 in town and Courier + rural $13 for RD and listed rural postcodes.

  1. NZ Urban zone: calculated rate $7 named Courier.
  2. NZ Rural zone: calculated rate $13 named Courier + rural, postal list pasted.
  3. Hide Courier when address contains RD, R.D., or Rural Delivery, so mixed-code RD addresses cannot keep $7.
  4. If both calculated rates could show, hide the urban title in Delivery customizations or blend with combined rates only when you want one method name.

What this setup is not

It is not a live NZ Post rural API. It is not address validation. It will not mark every rural driveway if the customer types a street without RD and the postcode is mixed. It prices and hides using the facts Shopify sends: typed address lines and postal code.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify add a New Zealand rural delivery surcharge?

Not natively by RD address. SMART can hide or rename methods when the address contains RD or Rural Delivery, and can return a calculated rate for a rural postcode list. Calculated rates need Carrier Service.

Is there an official NZ rural postcode list?

NZ Post treats rural as an address property. Merchant postcode packs exist (the lists on this page come from a widely used Rural Delivery Directory extract). Verify against NZ Post or your courier. Lists go stale.

Should I use postcodes or RD address matching?

Use both when rural cost matters. RD matching catches rural streets in mixed postcodes. The postcode list catches carts that omit RD. Address matching is Delivery customizations. Postcode pricing is Shipping rates.

Does Checkout simulator test the RD hide rule?

No. The simulator tests calculated Shipping rates only. Confirm address-line hide and rename rules in real Shopify checkout.

Can I block Private Bag the same way as rural?

Yes, with address-line contains Private Bag or PO Box. That is a deliverability rule, not a rural ticket. See the PO Box guide.
