How to test Shopify shipping rates without placing an order
Updated · SMART Shipping Rates (E-TRADE PARTNER)
You can test Shopify shipping rates without placing an order by building a test cart and destination in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules Checkout simulator, which runs the real calculated-rate engine. The simulator does not apply hide, rename, or reorder rules. Confirm those in real checkout, and use Activity log for live rate requests. Calculated rates need Shopify Carrier Service.
4.9 · SMART Shipping Rates does this with zones, calculated rates, and delivery customizations.

Many merchants walk a full checkout, or turn on payment test mode, just to see a shipping price. That is slow when you are changing weight tiers, postcodes, or product conditions. You need a way to ask the same rate engine checkout uses, without creating an order.
SMART Checkout simulator does that for calculated rates. It is not a replacement for real checkout. Delivery customizations still need a real cart at the shipping step, and items that do not require shipping can make simulator results differ from checkout.
Why a simulator matters
- It saves time when you are iterating on calculated rates, zones, and combined rules.
- It lets you retry the same destination and cart without dummy orders or refunds.
- It shows the rates SMART would return before customers see them.
- It is the first check, not the last. Activity log and real checkout still matter.
What Shopify can and cannot do natively
Shopify does not give you an in-admin calculated-rate sandbox. The usual native path is a real checkout, a development store, or payment test mode. That works, but it is a long loop when you only needed to know whether a zone matched.
| Testing task | Native Shopify | SMART |
|---|---|---|
| See a rate without placing an order | Limited, usually a full checkout | Checkout simulator for calculated rates |
| Test hide, rename, or reorder | Real checkout | Real checkout. Simulator does not apply these |
| Review live checkout rate requests | Limited | Activity log |
| Confirm Carrier Service rates | Real checkout | Simulator, then Activity log, then checkout |
Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules
- Open Shipping rates and check the Carrier Service notice if zone creation is disabled. The simulator tests calculated rates, and those need Carrier Service.
- Open Checkout simulator from the app navigation, or choose Simulate checkout on Shipping rates.
- Under Products, choose Add items. Add the variants you want in the test cart, then set quantities.
- Fill Destination: Country, City, ZIP / postal code, and the other address fields your zone uses.
- Choose Location (ship from), then optionally Select customer, Customer tags, and Checkout locale. With no customer, the run is a guest checkout.
- Tick the Shipping zones and Combined rules to include. Inactive combined rules cannot be selected.
- Choose Run simulation and read Results. Then open Activity log after a real checkout, and confirm hide, rename, or reorder in real checkout.
Common mistake: treating simulator results as the full checkout list
Results show the shipping rates checkout would receive from this app. Delivery customizations are not evaluated, so methods they would hide, rename, or reorder at checkout are shown unchanged. Gift cards and other items that do not require shipping can also make simulator results differ from checkout, because checkout may not request rates for those items while the simulator still includes them in the cart.
Worked example: a two-item metro cart
A homewares store has a $12 Standard calculated rate for metro postcodes. The merchant wants to know whether a lamp plus a cushion to 3000 still returns that rate, without placing a test order.
- Open Checkout simulator and Add items for the lamp and the cushion.
- Set Destination to an Australian metro address with ZIP / postal code 3000.
- Choose the warehouse Location the live checkout would ship from.
- Leave Customer empty to simulate a guest, keep the metro Shipping zones ticked, then Run simulation.
- If Results shows Standard at $12, open Activity log after one real checkout to the same postcode and confirm Shopify requested the same rates.
- If a hide or rename rule should change the method name or remove a native method, repeat the cart in real checkout. The simulator will not show that change.
That sequence keeps calculated-rate work fast, then uses live checkout traffic and a real shipping step for the parts the simulator cannot cover.
Tips for reliable rate testing
- Test one calculated-rate change at a time so Results is easy to explain.
- Include a matching destination and a non-matching destination, not only the happy path.
- Skip gift cards and digital products in simulator carts when you are comparing to checkout, or expect the totals to differ.
- Read the Checkout simulator reference for field-by-field behavior, then Activity log for live requests.
- If Results is empty, use Test your setup and Shipping rates not showing before rewriting the rule.

When to use Activity log and real checkout
Checkout simulator does not write to Activity log. The log is the history of rate requests Shopify sends at checkout, kept for up to 48 hours. Use the simulator while you build a calculated rate. Use Activity log after a real shipping step to see what Shopify actually requested. Use real checkout whenever the question is hide, rename, reorder, or any delivery customization.
Frequently asked questions
›Can I test Shopify shipping rates without placing an order?
Yes. In SMART Shipping Rates & Rules, open Checkout simulator, build a test cart and destination, and choose Run simulation. That tests calculated rates only.
›Does Checkout simulator apply hide, rename, or reorder rules?
No. Delivery customizations are not evaluated in the simulator. Confirm hide, rename, and reorder in real Shopify checkout.
›Why can simulator results differ from checkout?
Checkout may not request shipping rates for items that do not require shipping, such as gift cards or digital products. The simulator still includes those items in the cart, so Results can differ.
›Does the simulator write to Activity log?
No. Activity log records live checkout rate requests from Shopify, kept for up to 48 hours. Simulations are not checkout traffic.
›Do I need Carrier Service to use Checkout simulator?
The simulator tests calculated rates from Shipping rates and Combined rates. Those rates need Shopify Carrier Service. Delivery customizations do not, and they still need real checkout.
