Test your setup
Updated · SMART Shipping Rates (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Use Checkout simulator to run a test cart, destination, and ship-from location through the same calculated-rate pipeline checkout uses, without placing an order. Then confirm with a real Shopify checkout. Delivery customizations are not evaluated in the simulator, so hide, rename, and reorder rules still need a live checkout.
4.9 · SMART Shipping Rates does this with zones, calculated rates, and delivery customizations.

Good testing is small and deliberate. Test one rule at a time, write down the expected result, and use carts that clearly prove whether the rule matched.
Checkout simulator
Open Checkout simulator from the app nav, or from Shipping rates. Build a cart, set the destination, choose Ship from location, select which zones to include, then Run simulation. Results are the calculated rates this app would return to checkout.
- Delivery customizations are not applied. Rates they would hide, rename, or reorder still appear unchanged.
- Items that do not require shipping can still be included in the simulated cart. Real checkout omits them from the rate request, so results can differ.
- If a product is not stocked at the selected ship-from location, the simulator warns you. Shopify may request rates from a different location on a live checkout.
Simulator covers calculated rates, not hide rules
Use Checkout simulator for Shipping rates and Combined rates. Use real Shopify checkout for Delivery customizations, and as a final check on any calculated rate you will rely on.
Before you test
- Confirm whether the rule is a delivery customization, shipping rate, or combined rate.
- For calculated rates, confirm Shopify Carrier Service is available.
- Check Settings for weight unit, dimensional unit, volumetric divisor, default dimensions, multiple rates behavior, and rounding.
- Keep unfinished rules inactive until their conditions are ready.
- Prepare at least one matching cart and one non-matching cart.
Test delivery customizations
- Use a real checkout cart and address that should trigger the hide, show, move, rename, reorder, or sort action.
- Confirm the existing checkout method appears before relying on a rule that controls it.
- Check that the method list is still reasonable when the rule does not match.
- Remember that dynamic carrier rates that include the carrier name cannot be renamed.
Test calculated rates
- In Checkout simulator, use an address inside the target country, city, postal code, wildcard, or range.
- Set Ship from location when origin conditions are involved.
- Test the low and high edges of tiered ranges, including volume and dimensional-weight tiers.
- For base-plus-increment rates, test a cart at the base amount and a cart that triggers at least one increment.
- For product-based logic, test carts with and without the matching products.
- For combined rates, test the individual tagged rates before testing the blended result.
- Repeat the matching cases in real Shopify checkout before you rely on them.
Activity log
After a live checkout, open Activity log to see the rate request Shopify sent and how SMART evaluated it, including dimensions when those conditions or calculation bases ran. Entries are kept for up to 48 hours. Use Refresh if a request just happened.
Simple test matrix
| Case | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Expected match | Confirms the rule can apply |
| Expected non-match | Confirms the rule is not too broad |
| Postal code edge | Catches wildcard and range mistakes |
| Weight, volume, or quantity edge | Catches tier boundary mistakes |
| Mixed cart | Catches product and combined-rate behavior |
| Each ship-from location | Catches origin-condition mistakes |

Frequently asked questions
›Does SMART have an in-app checkout simulator?
Yes. Checkout simulator runs a test cart through the calculated-rate pipeline. It does not apply delivery customizations. Confirm hide, rename, and reorder rules in real Shopify checkout.
›Should I test inactive rules?
Use inactive rules while building unfinished logic. Activate a rule when you are ready to verify it in the simulator and in real checkout.
›What should I include when contacting support?
Include the rule name, cart contents, address, ship-from location if relevant, expected result, actual checkout result, and whether the rule is a delivery customization, shipping rate, or combined rate.
›How do I test postal code ranges?
In Checkout simulator, test at least one address inside the range, one outside the range, and an edge value near the start or end. Repeat the matching case in real checkout.
