Shopify Carrier Calculated Shipping: do you need it?

Updated · SMART Shipping Rates (E-TRADE PARTNER)

Carrier Calculated Shipping, also called Carrier Service, is Shopify's feature that lets apps return calculated shipping rates at checkout. SMART Shipping Rates & Rules needs it for custom calculated rates, but not for delivery customizations that hide, sort, rename, or reorder existing methods. If you only want to control the checkout list, you may not need it.

4.9 · SMART Shipping Rates does this with zones, calculated rates, and delivery customizations.

This is one of the most common setup questions we see from merchants: the app is installed, the rules look right, but the calculated rate does not appear at checkout. In many cases the missing piece is Shopify Carrier Service. It is not a separate delivery company. It is the Shopify feature that allows an app to send a calculated rate back to checkout.

The important part is deciding which job you are trying to do. Are you changing rates, or are you changing how existing methods appear? Those are different paths.

What Carrier Calculated Shipping means

Carrier Calculated Shipping is Shopify's checkout connection for calculated shipping rates. When a customer enters an address and reaches delivery options, Shopify can ask an eligible app for rates. The app evaluates the cart, address, products, tags, weight, and other configured conditions, then returns a shipping method and price.

In SMART Shipping Rates & Rules, that applies to the Shipping rates module and Combined rates. It does not apply to Delivery customizations, because those rules work on delivery methods that Shopify already has available.

What Shopify can and cannot do natively

Shopify can create many standard shipping rates without an app. Those native settings are often enough for simple flat rates, free shipping thresholds, and basic weight ranges. When you need custom calculated logic by product, postcode, cart total, quantity, or blended rate components, Shopify needs a way for the app to return the final price. That way is Carrier Service.

Common mistake: assuming every SMART rule needs Carrier Service

Only calculated rates need Carrier Service. Delivery customizations for hide, sort, rename, and reorder rules do not require it. If your goal is to clean up the existing checkout list, start there.

Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules

  1. Write down the outcome you need: change the price, or change the checkout method list.
  2. If the price must be calculated by SMART, open Shipping rates and check the Carrier Service notice if zone creation is disabled.
  3. Create the calculated rule under Shipping rates for weight, cart total, quantity, product, destination, or postcode logic.
  4. If multiple calculated rates should become one checkout method, configure the final result in Combined rates.
  5. If you only need to hide, sort, rename, or reorder existing methods, create the rule under Delivery customizations instead.
  6. Test at checkout with a real address and a cart that should trigger the rule.
  7. If a calculated rate does not appear, check Carrier Service first, then check the rule conditions.

Worked example: two merchants, two different needs

Merchant A has a standard Shopify rate called Express. They want to hide it when a product tagged fragile is in the cart. That is a delivery customization. Carrier Service is not needed because SMART is not creating a new price.

Merchant B wants a new rate that charges $12 for local postcodes, $24 for regional postcodes, and a per-kg increment over 10 kg. That is a calculated rate. SMART needs Shopify Carrier Service because the app must return the final rate amount to checkout.

Practical decision guide

  • Use Delivery customizations if the price is already correct and the issue is visibility, wording, or order.
  • Use Shipping rates if the price must be calculated from cart or address data.
  • Use Combined rates if more than one calculated rate component should become one checkout method.
  • Read the postcode guide if your main problem is destination pricing.
  • Read the hide, sort, and rename guide if your main problem is checkout method control.

What to check when rates do not show

First, confirm whether the rule is a calculated rate or a delivery customization. If it is calculated, check Carrier Service availability. Then test whether the cart meets every rule condition: product, tag, weight, cart total, destination, and postcode. Most missing-rate cases come down to either Carrier Service not being available or one condition not matching the test cart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Carrier Calculated Shipping?

It is Shopify's feature that lets eligible apps return calculated shipping rates to checkout. It is also commonly referred to as Carrier Service.

Does SMART Shipping Rates & Rules require Carrier Service?

Only for calculated rates in Shipping rates and Combined rates. Delivery customizations work without Carrier Service.

Can I hide or rename shipping methods without it?

Yes. Hide, sort, rename, and reorder rules in Delivery customizations do not need Carrier Service.

Why is my calculated rate not appearing at checkout?

Check whether Carrier Service is available, then confirm the test cart matches the rule conditions. Product tags, postcode ranges, weights, and cart totals must all match the rule.

Do I need Carrier Service for rate blending?

Yes. Combined rates blends calculated rate components, so Carrier Service is required for the final blended rate to appear at checkout.
