SMART Shipping Rates & Rules lets you build postcode and ZIP rules for custom rates, plus delivery customizations when you only need to hide, sort, or rename existing methods. Calculated custom rates need Shopify Carrier Service, while delivery customizations do not.

Postcode shipping is one of the first places a growing store outgrows basic shipping settings. A candle shop might charge the same rate across Melbourne metro but a higher amount for remote Victorian postcodes. A furniture store may need to price by suburb group because the delivery van can reach some areas weekly and others only by arrangement.

3. Open Shipping rates and create a rate for the destination group you want to price, such as Metro Melbourne, Regional VIC, or Remote Australia.
4. Choose the calculation basis: flat amount, cart total, weight, quantity, product, per-unit increment, or percentage when appropriate.
5. Add destination targeting with country, province, and postcode or ZIP rules. Use ranges or groups that match how your fulfillment team talks about the areas.
6. Test several real addresses in Shopify checkout. Include one address inside the rule, one outside it, and one edge case at the start or end of a range.
7. If you also need to hide or rename existing methods for those postcodes, create a separate rule under Delivery customizations.

Worked example: AU metro and remote postcodes

Imagine a homewares merchant shipping from Sydney. Small parcels to metro postcodes are simple, but bulky orders to remote areas cost more. A clean setup is to create one calculated rate for NSW metro postcodes, one for regional NSW, and one for remote Australian postcodes. Then layer weight tiers inside each destination group.

That same pattern works for ZIP code groups in the United States, outward codes in the United Kingdom, and province plus postal rules in Canada. The exact geography changes, but the rule design stays the same: start broad, add exceptions only where the shipping cost actually changes.
