How to hide Shopify shipping methods by customer tag
Updated · SMART Shipping Rates (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Shopify does not natively hide shipping methods by customer tag. SMART Shipping Rates & Rules can hide, show, rename, or reorder existing delivery methods when a logged-in customer has (or does not have) a tag such as wholesale, vip, or staff. These delivery customizations do not require Carrier Service.

Customer tags are how many stores separate retail buyers from trade accounts, VIP members, staff, or other checkout groups. Native Shopify shipping zones still show the same rates to everyone in the zone. That is why wholesale free shipping can leak to retail guests, or why VIP free shipping sits next to paid options that confuse loyalty members.
This guide is about controlling which existing delivery methods appear for tagged customers. If you need a wholesale strategy across pricing and method lists, also read B2B and D2C shipping options.
Common customer-tag shipping cases
| Customer tag | Typical goal | SMART action |
|---|---|---|
| wholesale / trade / b2b | Hide retail free shipping or economy methods | Hide specific methods |
| vip / premium-member | Show free shipping and hide paid methods | Hide paid methods or show only free |
| staff | Offer staff pickup or free delivery only | Show specific methods |
| express-eligible | Hide Express unless the customer is approved | Hide Express when tag is not present |
These are checkout visibility rules. They do not invent a new price by themselves. If the tagged group needs a different calculated price, use Shipping rates with a customer tag condition (Carrier Service required).
What Shopify can and cannot do natively
Shopify customer tags live on the customer profile. Shipping settings do not use those tags to filter methods at checkout. Delivery customization apps built on Shopify Functions can read customer tags when the buyer is logged in.
- Tags are labels on a customer profile. Segments are dynamic groups and are not what delivery customizations evaluate at checkout.
- Guest checkout has no customer profile and no tags. Customer tag is only matches logged-in customers who have that tag. Customer tag is not is also true for guests.
- In SMART, delivery customizations match a single customer tag with is or is not.
- Calculated rates can also use customer tags with has any or has none when Carrier Service is available.
Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules
- In Shopify Admin, tag the customer group consistently (for example wholesale, vip, or staff). Keep spelling identical.
- Open Delivery customizations in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules.
- Choose a condition set that includes customer tags (Cart, Customer & Location is enough for most stores).
- Add a Customer tag condition with operator is or is not, then enter the exact tag.
- Choose an action: hide specific methods, hide a delivery type, show only specific methods, rename, reorder, or show only the cheapest or highest method.
- Save the customization, then test with a logged-in tagged account and a logged-in untagged account.
- If guests should never see a special method, also hide that method when the customer is not logged in, or when the tag is not present.
Common mistake: testing as a guest
Customer tag is only matches a logged-in customer with that tag. Customer tag is not is also true for guests, so exclusive-method rules that hide when a tag is missing already cover guest checkout. Always test a tagged login, an untagged login, and a guest cart.
Worked example: VIP free shipping only
A skincare brand offers free shipping to customers tagged vip. At checkout, VIP members still see Standard ($6.99) beside Free shipping, and some pick the paid option by mistake.
- Tag loyalty members vip in Shopify (manually, in bulk, or with Shopify Flow after a spend or order-count trigger).
- In Delivery customizations, create a rule with customer tag is vip.
- Hide the paid Standard and Express methods for that rule, leaving Free shipping visible.
- Optionally rename Free shipping to VIP free shipping for tagged customers.
- Test a VIP login, a normal logged-in customer, and a guest checkout.
Inverse logic is useful for exclusive methods. To show Trade delivery only to wholesale buyers, hide Trade delivery when customer tag is not wholesale. Retail and guest checkouts then keep the default list.
When to use Delivery customizations vs Shipping rates
| Goal | Module | Carrier Service? |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or show existing methods by tag | Delivery customizations | No |
| Rename a method for tagged customers | Delivery customizations | No |
| Create a new calculated price for tagged customers | Shipping rates | Yes |
| Blend a wholesale base rate with a surcharge | Combined rates | Yes |
Tips for reliable customer-tag rules
- Use short lowercase tags and document them for anyone who edits customers.
- Keep the default checkout good for guests and untagged retail buyers, then use tags for exceptions.
- If a customer has multiple tags, every matching customization can apply. Avoid rules that hide every method.
- For product-driven hide rules, use hide by product or tag.
- For a fuller wholesale vs retail setup, use the B2B and D2C guide.

Guest checkout and untagged customers
Plan the default method list for guests and untagged shoppers first. Tag rules should create exceptions for known accounts. If a special wholesale method must never appear publicly, hide it when the customer tag is not wholesale, and confirm guest checkout does not show it.
Frequently asked questions
›Can Shopify hide shipping methods by customer tag natively?
No. Native shipping zones show the same methods to everyone in the zone. You need delivery customizations that read customer tags at checkout.
›Do customer tag hide rules need Carrier Service?
No. SMART Delivery customizations that hide, show, rename, or reorder existing methods do not require Carrier Service.
›Do customer tag rules work for guest checkout?
Guests have no tags. Customer tag is does not match guests. Customer tag is not is true for guests, so hiding a method when a tag is missing also hides it for guest checkout. Design defaults carefully, then test tagged, untagged, and guest carts.
›Can I show a method only to tagged customers?
Yes. Hide that method when the customer tag is not the required tag, or use show-only actions for the tagged group. Test both tagged and untagged logins.
›Can I also calculate different prices by customer tag?
Yes, in Shipping rates with customer tag conditions, when Carrier Service is available. Visibility control and price calculation are separate modules.
