Some products should not show every delivery method. A chilled product may need local delivery only. A fragile item may need a safer standard method. A bulky item may not fit the same checkout options as a small accessory. Hiding the wrong method at checkout is often cleaner than explaining it after the order is placed.

Product tags are especially useful because store teams already use them in Shopify. A tag like fragile, bulky, local-only, or no-pickup can become the condition that controls checkout.

Why product and tag hide rules matter

  • They prevent customers from selecting delivery options that your team cannot fulfill.
  • They let merchandisers control shipping behavior through Shopify product tags.
  • They reduce manual order edits and customer follow-up.
  • They keep existing rates in place while changing only the checkout method list.

What Shopify can and cannot do natively

Shopify can separate products into shipping profiles, but that is not the same as conditionally hiding a delivery method at checkout. If a method should disappear only when a tagged product is in the cart, or only for a customer tag plus product tag combination, delivery customizations are the better tool.

Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules

  1. Tag the relevant products in Shopify, such as fragile, bulky, local-only, or no-express.
  2. Open Delivery customizations in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules.
  3. Create a hide rule and choose the delivery method that should be removed.
  4. Add the product, collection, product tag, or customer tag condition.
  5. Add destination, cart total, weight, or quantity conditions if the hide rule should be narrower.
  6. Save and test a cart with the tagged product, a cart without it, and a mixed cart.
  7. Use Shipping rates only if you also need to create a new calculated price for the product.

Common mistake: using product tags inconsistently

If a hide rule depends on the fragile tag, every fragile product must use the same tag spelling. Decide the tag format once and document it for anyone who creates products.

Worked example: local-only plants

A garden store sells tools nationwide, but live plants are delivered only in local postcodes. The store tags live plant products local-only. When a cart contains that tag, standard parcel methods should be hidden outside the local delivery zone.

  1. Add local-only to all live plant products in Shopify.
  2. Create a Delivery customizations hide rule for parcel methods.
  3. Set the condition to product tag equals local-only.
  4. Add postcode conditions so the rule only hides methods outside the local zone.
  5. Rename the remaining local method to Local plant delivery if needed.

This setup does not create a new price. It simply prevents customers from selecting a delivery method that should not be offered for live plants.

Tips for product tag hide rules

  • Use short, plain tags that describe the shipping reason.
  • Test mixed carts because one tagged product should usually control the whole delivery choice.
  • Keep hide rules narrow enough that normal products still show normal methods.
  • Use product-based rates if the product needs a different price, not just a hidden method.
  • Use customer tag hide rules when the buyer group matters more than the product.
  • Use shipping zones when the rule depends on where the order is going.

When to hide, rename, or reorder instead

Hiding is best when a method should not be selectable. Renaming is better when the method is valid but the wording is unclear. Reordering is useful when several methods are valid but one should be more prominent. SMART Delivery customizations supports all three, plus sorting and show-only behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide a Shopify shipping method by product tag?

Do product tag hide rules need Carrier Service?

Can I hide a method for customer tags too?

Yes. See the dedicated guide on hiding shipping methods by customer tag for VIP, wholesale, membership, and staff setups.

Can I hide methods for a product and a postcode together?

Yes. Combine product or tag conditions with country, province, postcode, ZIP, or postal code conditions.
