How to set a shipping rate per item in Shopify

A per-item shipping rate charges based on the number of items in the cart, such as $3 per candle or $10 per poster tube. SMART Shipping Rates & Rules supports quantity-based calculated rates and per-unit increments for Shopify checkout. New calculated per-item rates need Shopify Carrier Service, while delivery customizations for existing methods do not.

Per-item shipping is useful when every additional unit adds a predictable handling cost. Think tea towels, candles, framed prints, spare parts, or sample packs. The first item covers the parcel setup, and each extra item adds a smaller amount.

It is not the right model for every store. If your products vary wildly in weight or size, weight tiers or product-based rules may be easier to explain. Per-item rates work best when the items in the rule behave similarly in the warehouse.

Why per-item rates matter

• They scale shipping cost with cart quantity without creating dozens of manual tiers.
• They are easy for support teams to explain: base price plus a fixed amount per item.
• They work well for product groups with repeatable packing costs.
• They can be blended with other rates so checkout still shows one clean method.

What Shopify can and cannot do natively

Shopify can create simple shipping rates, but per-unit logic often needs more flexibility than native settings provide. If you want one price for the first item, a smaller amount for each extra item, different quantity rules by destination, or product-specific quantity pricing, a calculated rate app is usually the clearer path.

Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules

1. Open Shipping rates and check the Carrier Service notice if zone creation is disabled when the app will return a new calculated rate.
2. Go to Shipping rates and create a calculated rate based on quantity or per-unit increments.
3. Choose whether the count applies to all cart items or only matching products, collections, or tags.
4. Set a base amount if the first item should cover parcel setup.
5. Add the per-item increment for each additional unit, or build quantity ranges if that is easier to audit.
6. Add destination or postcode conditions if the same item count costs more in some zones.
7. Use Combined rates if the per-item fee should be merged with another calculated rate before checkout.

Worked example: art prints in tubes

A print shop sells posters that ship in tubes. One tube can hold two posters, but three or four posters need a second tube. The store wants a simple quantity setup that reflects packing without confusing customers.

The store could also model this as a base amount plus a per-unit increment, but quantity tiers are easier here because the packing changes every two items. The best rule is the one your team can predict without a calculator.

Tips for per-item rules

• Use product tags for item groups that share the same packing behavior.
• Keep the checkout method name customer-friendly, such as Standard print delivery.
• Test carts with accessories because they often reveal counting mistakes.
• Use product-based rates when only certain products should trigger the rule.
• Use rate blending when the base rate and item fees should appear as one amount.

When per-item is better than weight

Choose per-item rates when packing cost follows item count more than total weight. Choose weight tiers when heavier carts are the main cost driver. Many stores use both, but for different product groups.
