Weight-based tiered shipping rates charge different delivery prices as the cart gets heavier. SMART Shipping Rates & Rules can calculate custom weight tiers, per-unit increments, and destination-specific rates for Shopify checkout. These calculated rates require Shopify Carrier Service, while hide, sort, and rename rules do not.

Weight tiers are practical when your shipping cost changes in steps. A furniture merchant might ship small decor under 5 kg for a low rate, side tables from 5 to 20 kg at a middle rate, and heavy chairs over 20 kg at a higher rate. The checkout should reflect that without asking customers to wait for a manual quote.

The best tier setup is boring in a good way. Every cart weight falls into one clear range, the rates are easy to test, and the names make sense to the customer.

It gets harder when you need weight tiers by postcode, per-kg increments above a threshold, product exceptions, or blended rates across multiple shipping rules.

Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules

1. Open Shipping rates and check the Carrier Service notice if zone creation is disabled. Calculated rates need Carrier Service available on the store.
2. Go to Shipping rates and create a new calculated rate for the zone or delivery scenario.
3. Choose weight as the main calculation condition.
4. Add tier ranges with no gaps: for example 0 to 5 kg, 5.01 to 20 kg, and 20.01 kg and above.
5. Set the price for each range. Use a flat tier price, a per-unit increment, or another calculation style supported by your rule.
6. Add destination targeting if the same weight should cost different amounts in metro and remote areas.
7. Test carts at the bottom, middle, and top of each tier before publishing.

Worked example: furniture delivery tiers

A furniture store ships home office products. The team wants lightweight desk lamps to stay affordable, medium parcels to cover packing materials, and very heavy carts to recover the extra handling cost. A simple weight tier table can do that clearly.

If the store also ships to remote postcodes, it can duplicate the logic into a remote zone with higher prices, or create a remote surcharge as a separate calculated rate and blend it with the base weight rate. The right choice depends on which setup your team finds easier to maintain.

Tips for reliable weight-based pricing

• Make sure product weights in Shopify are accurate. Bad product data leads to bad checkout rates.
• Use fewer tiers when possible. Four clear tiers are usually easier to support than twelve narrow ones.
• Decide whether the tier is based on product weight, packed weight, or a practical estimate, then be consistent.
• If heavy products need special restrictions, pair weight rates with product-based shipping rules.
• If the checkout shows both a base rate and a surcharge, use rate blending to show one cleaner method.

How to test before launch

Build a small test matrix before publishing. Include one cart below the first boundary, one exactly on each boundary, one just above each boundary, and one cart with mixed products. If destination targeting is involved, repeat those carts for at least one metro and one remote address.
