Pickup and local delivery are useful until they appear for the wrong cart. A customer outside your delivery radius should not see Local delivery. A bulky sofa should not offer Store pickup if the item cannot leave the warehouse that way. A parcel-only product should not show pickup-point options your team cannot fulfill.
This guide covers checkout visibility for pickup and local methods. It does not create carrier live rates. For pricing by destination, use postcode and ZIP rates or shipping zones.
When merchants hide pickup or local delivery
- Local delivery should only appear for selected postcodes, suburbs, or cities.
- Store pickup should disappear for oversized, chilled, or restricted products.
- Pickup points should not show when the cart can only ship as freight.
- Shipping methods should be hidden inside a local-only service area so customers choose local delivery instead.
Hide by method name vs hide by delivery type
| Approach | Use when | SMART action |
|---|---|---|
| Hide specific method names | You know exact titles such as Store pickup or Local delivery | Hide specific delivery method(s) |
| Hide by delivery type | You want every method of a type removed, even if titles vary | Hide delivery method(s) of type |
| Hide everything except one type | Local-only carts should not see parcel shipping | Hide methods not of type, or show only specific methods |
SMART can target delivery types including shipping, local delivery, pickup, pickup point, and retail. That is often cleaner than maintaining a long list of method titles when Shopify or carriers change display names.
What Shopify can and cannot do natively
Shopify can offer local delivery and pickup in Admin, including some radius and location settings. Native controls are still limited when the decision depends on product tags, customer tags, cart weight, mixed carts, or postal patterns that do not match a simple radius.
Setup steps in SMART Shipping Rates & Rules
- Write down when pickup or local delivery is valid: which postcodes, products, weights, and customer groups.
- Open Delivery customizations and create a rule for the case that should hide the method.
- Choose either hide specific method names or hide by delivery type (local, pickup, pickup point, shipping, or retail).
- Add conditions such as shipping postcode, city, province, country, product tag, collection, cart weight, cart total, or customer tag.
- If you need address-line matching (for example address contains PO Box), choose the Address & Contact Details condition set when creating the customization.
- Save, then test an eligible address and an ineligible address with the same cart.
- Confirm at least one delivery method remains visible for every cart you intend to sell.
Common mistake: hiding every method for edge carts
If a rule hides local delivery outside your radius and another rule hides shipping inside a product exception, a mixed cart can end with no methods. Test the hard combinations before going live.
Worked example: local delivery only in selected postcodes
A bakery offers Local delivery and Standard shipping. Local delivery is only viable for a short list of postcodes. Outside those postcodes, Local delivery should disappear. Inside them, the merchant prefers Local delivery first.
- Create a hide rule for Local delivery when shipping postcode is not one of the local codes.
- Optionally create a second rule that moves Local delivery to the top when the postcode matches.
- Rename Local delivery to Same-day local delivery if that wording is accurate for your cutoff times.
- Test one local postcode and one outside postcode with the same cart.
If the bakery also sells a catering tray that cannot use Standard shipping, add a product-tag hide rule for Standard when the cart contains that tag. Keep product and destination rules separate so each rule stays easy to audit.
Tips for pickup and local rules
- Prefer delivery type actions when method titles change often.
- Keep postcode lists in one place and reuse the same patterns across related rules.
- Use product or tag hide rules when the product cannot use pickup.
- Use customer tag rules when only trade accounts may use freight pickup.
- If you need a new local price by postcode, build it in Shipping rates and remember Carrier Service is required for calculated rates.

Related checkout cleanup
After you hide invalid pickup or local options, many stores also sort or rename the remaining methods, or show only the cheapest method when several parcel rates remain.
Frequently asked questions
›Can I hide Shopify store pickup at checkout?
Yes. SMART Delivery customizations can hide specific pickup methods or hide methods of type pickup or pickup point based on cart, product, customer, and destination conditions.
›Can I hide local delivery outside selected postcodes?
Yes. Use a hide rule with shipping postcode, city, or province conditions so local delivery only remains where you can fulfill it.
›Do pickup and local hide rules need Carrier Service?
No. Delivery customizations that hide or reorder existing methods do not require Carrier Service.
›Can I hide all shipping methods and leave only local delivery?
Yes, with hide-by-type or show-only rules. Test carefully so carts outside your local area still have a valid option or a clear non-service outcome you intend.
›Can I match PO Box style addresses?
You can use address-line conditions in the Address & Contact Details condition set, such as address contains a PO Box pattern, then hide methods that cannot deliver there. This is pattern matching on the address text, not a separate address-validation service.
